How to Clean Aluminium Windows

Aluminium windows are a great investment for your home or commercial property due to their aesthetics and the fact that they are easy to maintain and can last decades. To keep them looking their best, there are a number of recommendations to think about when looking at how to clean aluminium windows.

Cleaning The Inside

Starting with the inside of the windows, use a glass spray or multipurpose cleaner to apply onto the glass and then wipe down the solution from left to right and top to bottom for ultimate coverage. If necessary, use a squeegee to remove any streaks, or an old t-shirt by wiping across and then down the window in the same fashion.

Those tough areas in the corner of the window can be stubborn to remove, so a great tool to use is a cotton bud which will reduce damaging the frame. If you have any stains that are challenging to remove try a household rubber – but don’t apply too heavy-handed as you don’t want to cause further issues.

Cleaning The Outside

When cleaning aluminium frames from the outside, ensure that the windows are fully closed before hosing them down to remove any dirt and dust before scrubbing the frame with a cleaning solution that is mild enough to not cause any damage. Simply wipe down the frame with a clean damp cloth to ensure that no dirty water is left behind to dry on the frames. Finally use a hose again to rinse down the frame.

How Often Should You Clean Them?

Every property is different due to the elements around it and the factors which can make your windows dirty. Therefore it’s dependent on how unclean they get quickly, however it’s advised to clean the glass every month and then the frames every two months to keep them looking their finest.

What Not To Use On Your Aluminium Window

The benefit of aluminium windows is that they come with a powder coating to prevent them from scratches, marks and protection from all four seasons. That’s why it’s important to not compromise the effectiveness of the material by using harsh chemicals that may hinder this. Bleaches or abrasive cloths can cause damage, so a simple solution of warm water and soap will do the job just fine.

How To Prevent Streaks

We’ve all experienced cleaning a window thoroughly and then being left with streaks as soon as we walk inside the property. There are a number of ways to reduce this from happening to keep your windows gleaming throughout the year.

Newspapers have proven to be an effective way to avoid streaks thanks to their dense fibres that don’t contain silica or calcium carbonate. Squeegees are also a good tool and are frequently used by professional window cleaners in two forms.

A soft sponge is used for the first clean and then a rubber squeegee to get rid of the streaks in the same way that a car windscreen wiper does. Also, cleaning your windows on a cloudy day instead of a sunny one is helpful as the water won’t dry so quickly leaving those unwanted marks behind.
